The Easiest Mashed Potatoes Ingredients List

INGREDIENTS: For 8 to 10 persons

5 pounds russet potatoes
3 to 4 cloves garlic, optional
1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt, plus more to taste
Freshly ground black pepper
3 to 3 1/2 cups milk, or a mixture of milk and cream
1/2 cup unsalted butter
nutmeg powder

Recipe directions recap:

1) First peel and chop your potatoes and put them into the crock pot.

2) Time for seasoning. The drop your smashed garlic cloves on top of the potatoes.
Stir well and add ground pepper and salt according to your taste.

3) Pour in 1 1/2 cup milk and stir well. You can also cook the potatoes in chicken or vegetable broth instead of milk.

4) It’s now time to put the lid on and  cook four to five hours on HIGH or until the potatoes get very tender and soft.

5) Once potatoes are done, put butter in a saucepan at low heat until melt

6) We’re adding more milk. Stir the remaining 2 cups milk, or a mixture of milk and cream, into the melted butter and warm gently over low heat.

7) Time to mash your potatoes:
If you used garlic but don’t want the potatoes super garlicky, remove the garlic cloves and discard. Use a spoon to scoop out and discard any browned bits on the sides of the pot.
Use a potato masher or ricer to mash the potatoes right in the pot if your slow cooker is a strong one. (Though it is recommended to remove the pot for a few seconds while mashing and put it back to the slow cooker right after)

8) When the potatoes are as smooth as you like, slowly stir in the warmed dairy and butter. The potatoes will look soupy at first but they will quickly soak up the liquid. You may add 1/2 cup of milk or cream if you want a more creamy texture.

9) Adjust seasoning with salt or pepper if you feel it’s needed. I personally add a tiny little bit of nutmeg powder, like the French do. Really adding a special flavour that everyone loves in my family.

Few notes:

For lighter Mashed Potatoes: This recipe is based on Perfect Mashed Potatoes and they are quite rich and creamy. But of course you don’t need to add butter, milk, or cream — you can simply cook the potatoes and then mash them without additional dairy.

Potato Add-Ins: You can modify the flavor (and color) of my mashed potatoes. Add rutabaga, or use a mix of Yukon Gold and russet for color and flavor. Simply add another root vegetable and cook along with the main bulk of potatoes.
